@todd Those are natural springs. I grew up around frozen lakes and swamps. The pond is probably not too deep there. The ice is thin because the water is moving from the spring below. With a layer of snow on top they can be very dangerous to people who don't know the lake, swamp or pond. I knew my territory well and stayed away from the places with thin ice.
@todd I hated the cold when I was a kid but I miss it sometimes now. I was so poor I had to go out on the lake and go ice fishing or not eat sometimes.

@KawaTora thanks, it’s definitely not super deep, and is naturally re-filling (and has a flow into the creek) so that makes sense!
